Camp Safety: Rules and Expectations

GENERAL CONDUCT EXPECTATIONS AND REGULATIONS

The camp operates with a specific set of rules.  The dormitory regulations will be explained on registration day.  Other than compliance with these rules, we expect regular and prompt class attendance and the type of behavior that will bring credit to you, your home, and your school.  If it should become necessary to dismiss anyone from the camp, parents will be notified immediately, and all fees paid will be forfeited.

In order to allow camp to flow smoothly, we require that certain rules be followed:

AUTOMOBILES: Students attending the camp are not to drive or ride in cars or on the Panhandle Transit buses while at camp.  Students staying in the dormitories will be required to check their car keys with the dormitory supervisor.  Commuters and Canyon residents are to drive to and from the campus and are to leave cars parked in the parking lot except when they are going to lunch. Parents or residential campers need to sign out their students when taking them to eat, etc. with the dorm supervisor or camp secretary.

LASER POINTERS, SKATEBOARDS, ROLLERBLADES, SKATES, AND BICYCLES ARE NOT ALLOWED AT CAMP.  The University has acquired BIRD© electric scooters all around campus.  Campers will NOT be permitted to use or be on these scooters during camp.

CELL PHONESwill be allowed at camp with the following restrictions: phones must be turned off during classes.  Students are not allowed to make or accept phone calls in the dormitory after the 10:00 pm curfew unless it is an emergency.

ENERGY DRINKS: Energy drinks of any kind (Monster, Bang, 5-Hour Energy, etc.) are not permitted at camp and will be taken up immediately.

SMOKING/VAPING: Smoking and vaping is not permitted at any time while a student is in attendance at the camp.

DRUGSObviously, the use of illegal drugs is strictly prohibited.

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGESThe possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages is strictly prohibited.

CURFEW: Residential campers must be in their dorms each night by the 10:00pm curfew.  The only exception is on Friday, July 12th, the curfew will be 10:30pm after the Camp Ball is over.  Strict enforcement of the curfew regulation is maintained.

VISITING HOURSBoys are permitted to enter the visiting lobby areas in the girls' dorms from 4:00pm to 9:45 pm only and vice versa.  Any misconduct may result in the suspension of this privilege. 

CAMP ATTENDANCE: Daily attendance is taken at every class, assembly, evening activity, and nightly roll call (7 times for residential and 5 times for commuters).  

SICK STUDENTS: No student is permitted to remain in the dorm after 9:00 am unless he/she is ill and has received special permission from the dorm supervisor.  Our medical transporter will stop by the dorms each morning in case of sick students.  Campers who are ill will be evaluated by the on-staff nurse to determine course of action.  Parents will be notified before giving medication or transporting to the medical clinic.

CAMPUS BOUNDARIES: Campers will have specific boundaries for walking.

  1. SOUTH: Campers are allowed to walk in the south direction until they reach Wendy's or HTeaO.  Campers should not go south beyond those establishments.
  2. WEST: Campers can walk towards the local restaurants on the west side of campus.  These include United Grocery Store, Chicken Express, Subway, Robinson's BBQ, Taco Villa, Pizza Hut, Domino's Pizza, McDonald's, Little Caesars Pizza, Buff's, Boba Bubble Bar.
  3. EAST: Campers should not walk further than the Virgil Henson Activity Center.

It is important for all campers to adhere to these boundaries to ensure their safety and to respect the restrictions and guidelines set by the camp and the university.  Campers must use crosswalks at all times.

SUPERVISION: Adult supervision is an essential aspect of ensuring the safety and well-being at camp.  

  1. CAMP STAFF: WT Band & Orchestra Camp has many staff members who are responsible for supervising campers.  Among many are Resident Assistants, Student Events staff, directors, lesson teachers, UPD, and other support staff who are knowlegeable about camp policies and procedures.
  2. RATIOS: Our camp maintains a 10 to 1 camper to staff ratio to effetively supervise and assist campers.
  3. ACTIVITY SUPERVISION: During activities, adults are present to supervise and guide campers.  They ensure that campers follow safety guidelines and receive any necessary assistance or instruction.
  4. OVERNIGHT CAMPERS: Girls and boys are housed in separate dorms.  Each dorm will have a dorm supervisor and will maintain the 10 to 1 camper to RA ratio.

DEPARTURE: Most students will depart from the camp immediately following the Final Concert on Saturday, July 13th.  Only students with documented transportation problems (those who cannot obtain plane reservations, etc.) or students whose directors are attending the camp and are willing to assume responsibility for their conduct will be allowed to stay an extra night in the dormitory.  All others will be expected to check out on July 13th.

ALL STUDENTS WISHING TO STAY SATURDAY NIGHT MUST BE CLEARED WITH MR. LEFEVRE; DOCUMENTATION OF HIS/HER REASON FOR STAYING IS REQUIRED. Students who do have clearance to stay in the dormitory that evening will be required to observe a 10:30 pm curfew on July 15th.  There is an extra room charge of $27.00 per student for staying Saturday evening.

MISSING ITEMS: If you have lost an item/items during camp, check with Student Events (N101) or the Camp Office (MMNH 263). Lost nametags, cards, or keys should be reported promptly.  There will be fees for replacing dorm keys ($100) and Buff Gold cards ($10).
